HEAD SPIN: misleading headlines from across the Republic

Headline: "Binay is top TV ad spender among presidential bets"

On January 5, 2016, the Inquirer presented the results of a recent Nielsen study, which showed VP Binay as the top spender (from January 1 - November 30, 2015) on TV ads (linked here).

While the headline is factual, it is also a subtle product of spin. Why focus on TV spending? What about other Ads?

According to a separate Inquirer article (linked here), published January 7, 2016, when radio and print ads are also considered, the top spender is actually Mar Roxas!

With the information at their disposal, the Inquirer could have easily published and article with the headline: "Roxas Top Ad Spender." Or, for a more balanced approach: "Binay Top TV Spender; Roxas Top Spender on Everything Else."

For the reader's convenience here is a easy to read breakdown of the Nielsen Report, which we submit, humbly with an example of a spin-free (though admittedly, much duller) headline: "Nielsen Releases Presidential Ad Spending Figures"
